Chris Nagata

Hello Wildcats!

My name is Chris Nagata and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as your next ASUA Student Body President. What excites and motivates me to pursue this position is my passion for and devotion to serving YOU, the students.

I am a junior, a physiology major and Spanish minor. During my time at The University of Arizona, I have been privileged to serve three years in ASUA, specifically on the Arizona Students’ Association Board of Directors, where I actively advocate for a quality, accessible, and affordable higher education for university students in the state of Arizona. I have additionally served as a member of the Student Health Advisory Committee. Apart from my involvement in ASUA, I have been engaged on campus as a member of the Physiology/Surgery Club, Co-Selections Chair for Chain Gang Junior Honorary, and in Greek Life.

As your Student Body President, I will:

Protect:

In this time of financial crisis, ASUA should engage students in advocacy in order to protect our university and our pocketbooks. Students should not be forced to shoulder the burden of a state budget deficit in the form of escalating tuition, increasing class sizes, and decreasing program offerings. As your student body president, I will create opportunities for students to express their concerns and ideas so that we are not placed on the decision making table, but offered a seat at it.

Lobby Corps: I will develop the student Lobby Corps so that students are briefed on the latest legislative developments and given the opportunity to voice their opinions directly to their representatives in a timely and effective manner.

University-Wide Committees: I pledge to appoint strong ASUA and non-ASUA members to represent the student voice on university-wide committees, specifically the Strategic Planning and Budget Advisory Committee, the Undergraduate Council and Faculty Senate.

Provide:

ASUA exists to provide for the student body. As your student body president, I will respond to the needs of students by preserving and improving the services offered by ASUA so that each student has a fulfilling, rewarding and enriching experience at The University of Arizona.

Student Advising Center: I will host a student advising program within ASUA that will facilitate opportunities for successful students that are referred by their colleges to advise peers within their disciplines.

Entertainment: I intend to continue the UofA tradition and attract prominent acts to campus to provide the student body with access to unique entertainment opportunities.

Progress:

It’s time for ASUA to think progressively and actively promote diversity and transparency. As your student body president, I will ensure that directors, interns, and volunteers within ASUA reflect the diverse student body that it represents and that our student government is transparent and accountable to its electorate.

Diversity Advisory Board: I seek to promote diversity within ASUA by creating an advisory board that will include representatives from the multicultural and resource centers in order to ensure that ASUA is supporting the needs of a diverse student body.

Communication: I will institutionalize communication with the student body through (a) an ASUA blog with program updates, (b) frequent campus wide surveys, and (c) director and executive walk-and-talk hours where myself and the ASUA directors visit campus clubs and organizations not just during campaign season, but all year long.
